WEBSTER, MA - A roiling plume of ink black smoke caught the attention of many
people in and around downtown Webster on Tuesday evening, June 2nd. Webster fire
and rescue personnel responded, while dispatchers at the police department began
to field multiple calls for an unknown type fire in the area of the Webster Post
Office.
As police arrived on scene, they reported a working structure fire at 385 Main
Street, a very large, very vacant block of taxpayers – exacting expletive
comments from responding fire personnel. But as police and the first arriving
chief officer of the Webster FD investigated further, it was discovered that a
large boat was burning furiously at the rear of the structure in a field
overgrown with vegetation. The fire had not extended into the building.
Webster jakes made quick work of the land-locked boat fire, stretching two
hoselines to quickly knock down the boat fire and check the exposed building for
any fire extension into the structure. None was found. When the fire was
completely knocked down, firefighters overhauled the remains of the ‘land yacht’
with foam to insure the fire did not rekindle later in the evening. There were
no injuries, and the boat was a total loss. The cause of the fire is under
investigation.
The Webster FD responded to the incident with three engines, one tower ladder,
and Rescue 1. At the same time of the Webster alarm, the Dudley Fire Department
was dispatched to the area of Green Street, on the Webster town line, for a
smoke investigation. It was determined that the source of the smoke was caused
by the boat fire.
